Volunteer Opportunities
WTRC relies on its volunteers to assist as a companion to seniors at our retreats, to lend a hand at special events such as our annual fundraisers, and for behind the scenes help with mailings, collecting and pressing flowers for craft projects, etc., and serving on our Board of Directors.
Volunteers at senior retreats are given the added pleasure of spending quality time with elders; to serve as a companion on the hiking trail and during the craft activity, to participate and thereby engage seniors in the music group, and to enjoy a hot lunch with the company of our senior guests in the beautiful dining room at Alton Collins Retreat Center.
Volunteers with a variety of skills and expertise are needed to make our fundraiser events a success. Jobs include decorating, organizing the food, beverage, auction tables, procuring auction items, graphics and printing invitations, inviting guests, managing the entertainment and assisting at the actual event. Jobs at the event include assisting at the registration table, being a spotter during the auction, and just helping with the flow of the evening. The garden and garage sale needs help providing plants, baked goods, used items to sell as well as helping by working a shift the day of the event.
Please contact WTRC if you have questions or would like to spend time in any of these ways.

Donations and Support
Weaver’s Tale relies heavily on the financial support of individuals, corporations and foundations. It costs a senior $65.00 to attend our retreats but it costs Weaver’s Tale $100.00 for each participant to attend. Costs include staff salaries, day use rental and lunch, groceries, and administrative overhead, such as marketing and mailings. We must make up this difference through the support of donations from people like you. Click here to download our tax-deductible donation form.

Dear friends and family of WTRC,
While all of us are hurrying through our busy schedules and routines, we hope you are also thinking about ways that you can help a group who is frequently overlooked as a group in need; i.e., the seniors of our community. The WTRC staff want to continue to serve seniors in our community who are socially isolated, have suffered physical or mental changes, and have no financial means to enhance the quality of their lives.
I personally want to thank all of you for your very generous support this past year. As a result of your donations we were able to increase the number of senior programs, operate them at full capacity and cover the entire cost of staff salaries. We are delighted to announce that not only are we offering year round retreats at our long standing, dependable, old-growth-forest-environment location at Alton Collins Retreat Center, we are expanding our programs to include use of the Portland Memory Garden in SE Portland. The Portland Memory Garden is especially designed for persons with memory impairment and for their caregivers. Located closer within Portland city limits, retreats at this location may be more cost effective and/or more manageable by seniors with more severe health issues. At Alton Collins Retreat Center seniors and/or caregivers can enjoy a day of beauty in the woods on wheelchair accessible hiking trails, receive relaxing and nurturing massages, engage in uplifting music and stories, and enjoy a delicious hot lunch. At the Portland Memory Garden, seniors will experience a shortened program that is nature focused. Groups can bring a picnic to enjoy the garden even more. Weaver’s Tale’s mission is to help elders stay connected to our community and to nature.
Dear friends, if you have considered helping Weaver’s Tale grow, now is the time to look inside and commit by making a donation of an amount that feels good. For your convenience there is a donation form included.
With gratitude,
Edie Seyl Polson, Executive Director
We badly need your financial help:
It costs a senior $65 to attend a full day summer program yet it costs WTRC $100 per senior to attend. We rely heavily on private donations to supplement these costs. Grant funding has been minimal. We are actively pursuing grant funding for 2009 through the Portland Neighborhood Coalition’s small grants program which will serve to expand our caregiver outreach programs.
Help a socially isolated and/or sensory deprived senior re-awaken to the beauty of nature; give seniors a chance to return back to their roots. Purchase a SpirAH gift certificate for your favorite elder or elder group to attend a Weaver’s Tale Retreat. Contact us for details.
Did you know that you can write in “Weaver’s Tale Retreat Center” as a recipient of United Way funds? Donate your car to the VOA and ask to have the funds donated to Weaver’s Tale Retreat Center.
